Case Study: Hydrovac Stormwater Innovation
Job Type: Gabion Rock Forebay Construction
Description
When Hydrovac needed a safer and more efficient way to install a gabion rock forbay at a site with access challenges, GRABIT provided the answer.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Stormwater treatment ponds and wetlands require a robust forebay bund as an essential element for environmental performance and life value of the treatment assets.
Typical installation of gabion rock involves having the rocks delivered to site, then manually loaded into wheelbarrows, wheeled to the wetland area and hand-placed into the baskets.
Often access to these areas is challenging and typically requires excavator tracking, which can result in environmental damage and pose a safety risk to operators having to traverse steep embankments.
SOLUTION
Hyudrovac identified that using a grab truck to install the gabion rock stormwater forebay would ensure a safe, efficient and accurate delivery of rocks and approached GRABIT to assist.
Our team was able to pick up the gabion rock directly from the supplier and, using the grab truck attachment that can extend up to 10 metres, place the rock straight into the baskets.
Using a grab truck meant there was no landscape damage at the wetlands area and no associated health and safety risks to people on site.
The GRABIT solution also eliminated the need for stockpiling of rocks within a constrained space, greatly reduced the time it took to complete the job and significantly reduced the manual labour required.
