Case Study: Clean-up of illegally dumped waste

Job Type: Waste Removal

Description

Illegal dumping of rubbish is a problem in many areas of Auckland and dealing with the clean-up is an ongoing problem.

When Auckland Council needed a steep bank cleared of illegally dumped waste, GRABIT provided a safe and efficient solution.

About the Job:

Over a few years, people had been using a steep roadside bank in Hunua as an illegal dumping site.  Rubbish included furniture, appliances and household rubbish.

The clean-up job presented significant challenges due to the steep gradient of the bank.  Council contractors were initially looking at using a team of abseilers to descend the bank, hand load the rubbish into bags and then haul it back up.  This would have taken considerable manpower, and created significant health and safety risk exposure.

Solution:

GRABIT’s grab trucks are fitted with a crane and clamshell grab system that can reach 10 metres.  This enabled the truck to be positioned on the roadside and, using the crane system, reach down the bank, grab large piles of rubbish and load them directly into the truck.

With a grab truck capacity of 650 litres, the bank was cleared to a maximum reach of 10 metres in just three hours - with 30 cubic metres of rubbish recovered.

Using a Grab Truck was the ideal solution to remove and dispose of the waste.  No other machinery or manpower was needed, and the job was performed safely and quickly.
